Facts about cervical cancer.

fact 1. Cervical cancer is a cancer of the cervix.

fact 2. The cervix is the most important organ in the reproductive system.

fact 3. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the main cause of the disease.

fact 4. The main way to contract the human papilloma virus is through sexual intercourse.

fact 5. Multiple sexual partners increase the risk of contracting HPV. Early sexual activity can also be a problem, due to the none-mature cell's increased ability to take on cancer cell growth.

fact 6. Cervical cancer is almost impossible to detect by oneself.

fact 7. Cervical cancer is a treatable survivable disease, especially with early detection.

fact 8. World wide, cervical cancer is the second most widely diagnosed cancer in women.

fact 9. In America,it is estimated that 12 thousand new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed each year.

fact 10. We still lose between four and five thousand women a year to full stage cervical cancer.

fact 11. Most of the women who lose their lives due to cervical cancer NEVER had a pap smear.

fact 12. Anemia is frequently associated with cervical cancer, also, weight loss, fatigue, leg and severe lower back pain and the loss of regular appetite.

other symptoms to look for are

1. vaginal bleeding after intercourse

2. unusual vaginal discharge

3. pain during sexual intercourse

4. pelvic pain

5. heavy bleeding between menstrual cycle

6. increased urinary frequency

fact 13. Regular check-ups and clean habits are the simplest approach to preventing cervical cancer.

fact 14. The surest way to stay on top of this cancer is through a pap smear, performed quite painlessly by your gynecologist.

fact 15. Most pap smear test results come back with a class 1 rating. There are, however, 5 class ratings and in degree's of severity here is a breakdown.

class 1. normal

class 2. inflammation or irritation.

class 3. cervical dysphasia, this can range from mild to serious.

class 4. is one of a variety of cancers or pre-cancers.

class 5. is one of full on serious invasive cervical cancer signs.

fact 16. If your pap test comes back class 3 or above you will need to get an immediate second opinion from a different laboratory with a second opinion from another doctor. If that test comes back with signs of dysphasia, an outpatient procedure known as a cone biopsy is the next step to rule out cervical cancer.

fact 17. If cervical cancer is detected, do not prolong treatment. If left unchecked the disease can spread to the vagina and surrounding tissue.

fact 18. This disease can potentially damage the bodies reproductive organs and diminish the capacity for women to have children.

fact 19. The infected cancer cells can be surgically removed.

fact 20. A combination of chemotherapy and radiation (chemo-radiation) is very effective in the treatment of cervical cancer.

As of this writing ,June of 2006 there has been a shot developed and approved by the FDA to combat cervical cancer head on.

fact 21. This cervical cancer shot claims it has the potential to all but eradicate cervical cancer in our lifetime. It is a vaccination for the human papilloma virus (HPV).

fact 22. It might be a hard pill to swallow for some parents to take their adolescent girl (8 to 13 yr. old) in for a vaccination against a sexually transmitted disease. Some parents believe this will give the child a green-light to start having under-age sex.

fact 22. The HPV vaccine may be used on adolescent boys too!, before they become sexually active.

fact 23. If the HPV vaccine is to gain wide spread acceptance it will need to be promoted as a cancer prevention vaccine instead of a vaccine for sexually transmitted diseases.

fact 24. Some experts who are fighting this disease are hopeful that the HPV vaccine be included with other adolescent shots such as the meningitis vaccine, only time will tell.

fact 25. Early detection makes this a very treatable disease.

Signs Of Ovarian And Cervical Cancer

Saturday, December 8, 2012
Most women have heard of cancer of the cervix. It is one of the reasons you are pressured so much to see your doctor once a year and have a pap smear done. Cervical cancer is a very serious disease that all women should be aware of and take measures to prevent. It is the second leading type of cancer found in women today. However, if you have a routine exam yearly then it greatly reduces the risk of you having this disease. It helps to reduce the risk by allowing your doctor to find and treat the cancer before it has time to spread and turn into invasive cancer. So what causes cancer of the cervix?

Cervical cancer is when cancer cells develop in the lining of a woman’s cervix. The cervix is the lower part of womb or uterus. African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanic are in the high risk category for this disease. It is also very common in middle age women and older. It does take time for cancer of the cervix to develop which is why early screening is important. When cancer develops normal cells begin to deform and change into cancer cells. They go through a process when the cells are in a precancerous stage and if not treated it changes into cancer. Flat but scaly surface cells line the cervix and this is the most common place that invasive cancer of the cervix develops.

Although the cause of cancer of the cervix is not known there are certain factors that increase the risk of developing this type of cancer. The sexually transmitted disease called human papillomavirus or HPV for short is highly associated with invasive cancer of the cervix. Other factors that increase your chances of developing cancer of the cervix include a history of sexual transmitted diseases, having multiple partners and having sex when very young. Women who smoke double their risk of developing cancer of the cervix. It is very important for a woman to have regular routine exams to help find this condition early so they can receive treatment and prevent invasive cancer of the cervix from developing.

The beginning stages of cancer of the cervix normally do not have any warning signs. In fact, you may feel perfectly fine. The main way to detect this cancer in its early stages is by the annual routine exams. This test will show if precancerous cells are developing. As the cancer progresses you may develop signs such as a vaginal discharge that is yellow and has a noticeable smell. Abnormal vaginal bleeding may occur and you may experience lower back pain, pain during sex and painful urination. If cancer of the cervix is not treated then it will spread to other organs in the surrounding areas. If left untreated to long it can become life threaten and be too late to receive treatment of any value. Once the cancer spreads to vital organs there is not much that can be done therefore, it is imperative that all women receive regular monthly exams.

Vaccine For Cervical Cancer

Sunday, December 2, 2012
A women's medical group is fighting cervical cancer by issuing guidelines that call for inoculating all girls ages 11 and 12. More than 10,000 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. At least 3,500 women will die.

However, a controversy has started a year, or more, before the vaccine will be ready for the public. In the hopes of heading off a confrontation, officials from the developing companies -- Merck & Co. and GlaxoSmithKline -- are meeting with advocacy groups to try to relieve their concerns. Merck is creating the drug to be used on 11 – 26 year old women.

"The guidelines state that routine vaccination with Gardasil is recommended for 11- and 12-year-old females and for females ages 13 to 26 who have not previously been vaccinated or who have not completed the full series, and that vaccination with Gardasil can be started at nine years of age," Merck said in a news release.

The American Medical Women's Association recommends that doctors check all women 30 years and older for the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that may cause the cancer. The 14,000-member group is also lobbying insurance companies to pay for the vaccine.

The group is planning on re-directing attention to the benefits of new tools to fight cervical cancer, which has a kill rate of 230,000 women annually. The association is taking a stand in favor of the vaccine. A politically volatile topic -- HPV can be transmitted through sexual contact.

"We wanted to reaffirm that girls really do need access to this vaccine," said Dr. Susan Ivey, the association's president and an adjunct associate professor at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. "We wanted to frame the discussion in a public-health context, where what you really want is to make your population resistant to diseases and one way to do that is through vaccination."

The American Medical Women's Association is the first non-government body to recommend routine vaccination for young girls. Doctors say the vaccine is most effective when given before sexual activity starts.

The vaccine targets four strains of human papillomavirus. Many women carry HPV through their entire lifetimes, but most women are able to fight off an infections before they ever realize they have the virus.

Beyond the vaccine, the American Women's Medical Association is advocating wider use of a relatively new test that goes beyond the standard Pap smear that typically is used to check women for cervical cancer.

Christine Baze 38, underwent surgery and radiation and chemotherapy to treat an advanced case of cervical cancer. She hope the vaccine and HPV test will help a hundreds of women avoid her suffering.

"It's incredible the tools that are available to prevent cancer now," she said. "I just don't want anybody to have to go through what I went through ... and the good news is, they don't have to. We have an amazing opportunity to eliminate this cancer."

While the idea of a mandatory vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease has ignited a worldwide moral debate, the release of the drug was approved in the USA in June 2006.

At the moment, Canada is the only country actively proposing the vaccine for both boys and girls as it causes a cosmetic blemish when given to boys.

Cervical Cancer 101 What You Need To Know About

Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Cervical Cancer affects the female body in the cervix region. The womb of a woman finds its opening through the cervix. Many a times the human papilloma virus causes the disease. It is transmitted sexual exchanges. The cervix being the most important organ of the reproductive system requires proper attention as far as cancer onset is concerned. Such a cancer affects the other organs of the cervix region and can cause damage to the reproductive organs. This makes the disease all the more fatal. Such a spread is commonly termed as metastasis.

Although human papilloma virus is the main cause of the disease but it is also diagnosed with women who are in a habit of smoking. The instances of lung and breast cancer associated with the cervical cancer are there. This shows that the susceptibility of women to have cancer is higher by the means of cervical cancer. The disease is indicated by the presences of warts on the area around cervix. But a regular medical check up is required because sometimes the warts may not even appear on the skin and the disease goes undetected.

The common symptoms of the disease are prolonged pains in the thoracic region. Sometimes the leg and the lower back start paining unbearably. Anemia is very frequently associated with cervical cancer. As a result of anemia the patient also experiences a weight loss and fatigue. The person also looses his normal appetite. The detection of this carcinoma by oneself is almost impossible. It is at the later stages only that, with the help of a doctor can one detect it.

The disease is very deadly as its detection is very difficult. Though the doctors can detect it by a simple pap smear but if the treatment is avoided for too long then it may cause a fatal results. The most important thing to note here is that the disease can spread to other parts of the body including the vagina and the other connective tissue. It spreads vigorously and the infection spreads very fast. The disease has the potential to damage the primary reproductive organs and jeopardize reproductive capacity of the woman.

A particular form of papilloma strain increases the vulnerability to disease. Also improper sexual behaviour and inadequate hygiene also caters to the onset of cervical cancer. A drug administered to prevent miscarriage (diethylstilbestrol), if given in great quantities also increases the susceptibility of the disease. The diagnosis of the disease is done by examining the vaginal fluid of the suspected patient and is checked for the strains of cancer.

Chemo-radiation is a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is an effective measure in treatment of cancer. The infected cells can also be surgically removed. But the woman has to make a tough decision regarding jeopardizing her fertility. Thus most women go for the usual medication. A simple approach to prevent the disease is to have clean habits and regular check ups. The disease can be prevented by such steps though it cannot be ruled out after these.

A healthy woman is the most important asset of a family and there fore a woman should keep her self clean and ready to prevent such disease.

The Top 5 Ways to Reduce Cancer Risk

Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Do you know someone with cancer? Perhaps you are suffering from cancer? There is no doubt that it is a very terrifying situation to be faced with. Billions of dollars have been spent on researcher on looking for a cure, yet none has been discovered yet.

The good news is that certain types of cancer can be prevented by following some common-sense tips and making some lifestyle changes. This has been shown in population studies, research done by comparing very large group of people living in different parts of the world.

This article will provide details on five things you can do to dramatically cut down your risk of cancer.

#1 - What You Eat Matters

Scientists don't want to make a strong statement that what you choose to eat could affect your risk of cancer. But your mom was right all along. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables have been shown in studies to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. These foods are very rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and potent anti-oxidants that can slow down and eliminate cancerous cells.

Citrus fruits such as lemon and oranges contain bioflavonoids and limonoids that have been shown in lab and animal studies to cause cancerous cells to die in 48 hours.

As well, experts do recommend that you reduce the amount of meat that you consume. Also throw in whole grain foods as well. And don't forget the healing properties of green tea. Some studies have shown that drinking three cups of green tea cuts down the risk of breast cancer. The reason? Green tea contains potent anti-oxidants that deactivate harmful oxygen free radicals. Also, green tea contains many other active substances that seem to promote health and well-being.

Avoid dehydration by drinking 8 glasses of water daily. It may help to lower your cancer risk by allowing your own body the ability to flush away toxic substances.

#2 - Exercise and Physical Activity

Some studies show that being overweight increases your chance of developing many types of cancer. Exercise is not fun for most people, so start by choosing mild and somewhat easy exercises. For example, if you have never exercised before, don't bother going to the gym as the first step. Start by taking 15 to 30 minutes brisk walk around your neighbourhood. Do this three times weekly.

To ensure that you continue with your exercise program, schedule it in! Just like going to work, you don't find time to go to work. By scheduling a small block of time for a quick 15 to 30 minutes walk, you are more likely to continue on.

There is good evidence to show that highly successful and effective people exercise regularly.

#3 - Avoid Toxins

In two words, don't smoke. Also don't expose yourself to second hand smoke. Studies show that it is just as harmful. When tobacco is burnt, it produces thousands of toxic chemicals, many of which are proven to cause cancer. And it's not just lung cancer. Smoking is linked to cervical, kidney and bladder cancer.

Studies have shown that a glass of wine is good for you but too much alcohol is linked to various types of cancer. Excessive alcohol consumption is linked to colon, liver, esophagus and throat cancer.

For females with a family history of breast cancer, alcohol consumption seems to further increase the risk. Experts suggest this group of female to refrain from drinking alcohol.

#4 - Cut Down on Sun Exposure

Skin cancer risk can be greatly reduced by avoiding excessive sun exposure. The golden tanned look can be attractive but there is a price to pay. Not only is it going to increase skin cancer risk, it also ages the skin quickly. At a later time, your skin becomes wrinkled permanently.

Avoid tanning beds and always put on a sunscreen before going out on a sunny day.

Why not get two benefits from staying away from the sun? Benefit from a lowered skin cancer risk and a healthier younger looking skin.

#5 - Natural Remedies, Vitamins and Herbal Supplements

Many vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies are used around the world to prevent cancer. For example, vitamin D seems to reduce the risk of all types of cancer. As for prostate cancer, some studies show that selenium can cut the risk down.

Supplements are an excellent choice since many of them are very low cost. Moreover, many of the recommended vitamins and minerals are already found in your daily multivitamin that you take.

Start today. Take the necessary first step in preventing cancer. This you can control and you will benefit from this smart move for a lifetime.

Diagnosis Of Cancer And How You Can Control Your Emotions.

Friday, November 16, 2012
Emotional issues

For everybody it is a shocking time, if you receive the information from your doctor. Its very important, to bring your strong emotions under control. There are so many different aspect of living with cancer - from the pure medical issues, to emotional aspects, to the impact on the family as well as daily living considerations.

Are you sitting down? Accept that getting a cancer diagnosis is a shock to the system and people often go through the normal stages of grieving - from denial, bargaining, anger and depression and finally acceptance. How you deal with this depends much on the type of person you are and how they have dealt with similar issues in your life.

Don't go it alone. There are people who are professional counselors specifically trained to deal with people who have cancer. Sometimes it may be difficult to speak about your real feelings to family or friends, because they are also emotionally involved. A counselor is there for you and will help you come to terms with the things that you may be struggling with in a caring but neutral environment.

Join a support group. These are invaluable. Support groups go a long way towards helping people deal with the psychological aspects of living with cancer. Sharing experiences with people who are also experiencing firsthand what you are going through, goes a long way towards making things easier to live with. Here you can freely speak your mind without fearing that what you say might affect your relationships at home or with friends.

Deal with depression. Accept that there will be times when you feel lonely, depressed and sad. If you never feel this way, you are probably not facing up to the situation. Don't feel guilty when you feel depressed - it is a normal reaction in the situation. Learn to recognize the signs of depression - early awakening, excessive sleeping, a change in eating habits, and a lack of interest in things that formerly interested you, a feeling of continuous fatigue - and take action when they continue for longer than two weeks.

Decisions, decisions. It is possible those practical things may change for a while and that the person with cancer may need extra assistance and care. Discuss the options and deal with practical issues such as transport to and from medical appointments, possible home nursing if necessary, what to tell friends and family, medical costs, leave from work, the division of the household tasks for the time the family member with cancer may not be able to perform his/her share of the housework. There is no point at all in avoiding these topics as they are much easier to discuss beforehand than when they arise.

Family matters

Families will react in very different ways. In crises families tend to behave the way they always do, just more pronouncedly so. If a family is into avoidance, this is how this situation will be dealt with. Or if they are generally supportive, that will be the main trait of how they deal with a cancer diagnosis in one of the members of the family. Family counseling might ease the situation for everyone.

Cancer Treatment, Limiting Factor In Rising Survival

Friday, November 9, 2012
Trenton Martkes

The average length of life now is somewhere around 75 years right? Which is crazy when you consider the dramatic increase that this number represents in the amount of knowledge and technology that medicine has experienced in the last 30 years. The problem is that we get people to live longer and we find out the next major factor that is limiting the length of our life. At this moment that limiting factor is cancer and our lack of definitive cancer treatment.

It isn't that we don't understand cancer very well--because we do. We know that it goes back to errors that occur in our DNA in one cell most of the time that enable that cell to break out of the normal and healthy limitations of growth and connectivity to other cells. This rogue cell than goes and reeks havoc by invading areas critical to life and destroying them by disrupting the form and therefore the function of whatever organ they have invaded. It also isn't that we don't have any knowledge of cancer treatment -- because we do. We have drugs that will go in and (as selectively as possible) take out the cells that can't otherwise be controlled. We also use physics to our best ability with radiological oncology and gamma knife surgeries. We now can find cancer much sooner and treat it more definitively.

The problem is that cancer is bigger than we can handle right now and is able to evade human's abilities to control it. We can't cure the most aggressive forms, we can't detect the most subtle cases, and our cancer treatment is much much too crude. The treatments are necessarily toxic to the cancer but we haven't gotten good at making it selective so that the body doesn't take a serious hit. Maybe the largest part of cancer treatment that we fail on is prevention.

We as American’s and as humans more generally have a lot of bad habits and have set up our world to rely on too many things that are extremely hazardous to the environment and to our health. We smoke too much while knowing full well that it is assaulting our lungs, we eat too much fat knowing that it gives us cancer of the colon and the breast, we work and live in air that we have made toxic to breathe, etc. Yes we are really our own limiting factor, not cancer, not our lack of good cancer treatment. I wonder if we will ever wake up and stop blaming doctors for not being good enough and start to take responsibility for our actions.

Effect of Cancer with Hair Loss

Friday, November 2, 2012
Chemotherapy hair loss is an unfortunate reality that many cancer patients have to face. Chemotherapy hair loss is not caused by all chemotherapy drugs, but it is a common after effect.

Chemotherapy hair loss may include scalp, facial, axillary, pubic and body hair. Varying from slight thinning to complete loss of hair, chemotherapy hair loss occurs over a period of days or weeks. After completion of therapy, regrowth usually occurs in six to eight weeks.

Hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy, but not all drugs cause hair loss. Talk to your healthcare team about what to expect. In most cases, your hair loss will be temporary.

If you start to lose your hair, you may find that it becomes thinner or falls out entirely. It may be sudden or gradual. Hair loss can occur on all parts of the body – you may lose the hair on your head, some or all of your eyelashes and eyebrows, and body hair (including pubic, chest and underarm hair). You may also notice that your scalp feels tender.

Many people find that their hair starts to grow back before their chemotherapy treatment is finished or very soon afterwards. Some people find that their new hair is slightly different in colour or texture.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America understands that chemotherapy hair loss, and changes in skin and body can be devastating after effects of cancer treatment. CTCA's Cosmetic Image Enhancement program helps women and men prepare for radiation therapy and chemotherapy hair loss. Image Enhancement program classes and seminars for you and your loved ones are designed by community members, beauticians, cosmetologists and salon personnel. These classes are designed to help you plan ahead for chemotherapy hair loss.

Be gentle with your hair. Use a mild shampoo, a soft hairbrush and set your hair dryer on low heat or let your hair dry naturally.

Get a shorter cut if you have long or medium-length hair. This will make your hair look fuller and thicker. It might help to make any hair loss less dramatic for you.

Avoid dyeing, perming or straightening your hair during treatment. Talk to your healthcare team to find out when you can begin these activities again.

Try wearing a scarf, turban or hat if you feel sensitive about your loss of hair. This will help keep your head warm as well.

Consider buying a wig or toupée. You may want to select it before your hair falls out so that it will be easier to match to your own hair colour and style.

Protect your scalp when you are outside. A wide-brimmed hat or scarf can help. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 with good UVA protection on your scalp when you are outside.

How to Help During Cancer Treatment

Friday, October 26, 2012
Having a family member, friend or co-worker battle against cancer is one of the hardest and worst realities in life. No one likes to help someone deal with cancer, but at some point almost all of us will have the opportunity to walk beside someone we care about through one of the most difficult times of their life: cancer treatment.

I have had the privilege (and I do mean privilege) of helping out both of my parents and one of my closest friends during their weeks and months of cancer treatments. At first I was quite intimidated and unsure of how to help in such serious and life-threatening situations. I thought because I didn't know the perfect things to do that I couldn't do anything at all. Was I wrong.

Some of the best ways to help out a friend or loved one as their undergo cancer treatment is in the most practical ways. Don't look past how helpful cleaning their bathrooms, doing their dishes, or collecting their garbage can be. It is an amazing thing to get down and dirty on behalf of someone else. Look around and simply see what needs to be done. Mow their lawn, plant some fresh flowers, or get their car cleaned on the inside and out.

Taking care of the family of the one getting cancer treatment is one of the most helpful things you can do, especially when there are children involved. Offer to take the children to school and pick them up, or invite the kids over to your house for frequent sleepovers during the cancer treatment. It will be good for the parents and good for the kids to be separated during such a hard time. Involve the kids in doing something special for their parent who is in cancer treatment. Take the kids to a boutique that allows you to paint your own pottery, for example. Help the kids make something memorable for their loved one. You can do simple things for the family of someone who is in cancer treatment like go grocery shopping, prepare meals or take their family out to special meals.

Far too often people think that helping out during a time of crisis such as cancer treatment that they have to do extraordinary things. The truth is that it is the ordinary things that need to happen long before anything else will be helpful. There is no doubt that dealing with cancer or undergoing cancer treatment is extremely hard. But the support and help of friends and families can make even the worst things in life better.

Tips For Preventing Cancer

Friday, October 19, 2012
Cancer is one of the most feared diseases of all time. There are so many different kinds of cancer that can strike both men and women, even children.

While modern medicine does claim a little success in eliminating some kinds of cancer, its failure rate is dastardly!

The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 1,400,000 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2006. Over ½ million will die of cancer in 2006. In addition, it is believed that 41.28% of men and women born today will be diagnosed with cancer at some time during their lifetime. This is nearly one person in two.

As frightening as the statistics are, there is so much that we can all do to reduce our odds of being a victim of cancer!

Nobel prize winner, Dr. Otto Warburg, found that healthy cells obtain their energy from oxygen, while cancer cells get their energy from fermentation, or the production of sugars! Cancer is caused by an oxygen deficient, glucose-rich (sugar) environment. Cancer cannot exist when the body is flooded with aerobic oxygen!

The body needs to have a proper pH balance (potential Hydrogen) in order to be in optimum health. A higher pH is more alkaline and oxygen rich. A lower pH is more acid and deprived of oxygen. A pH of 7.0 or higher is alkaline. Below 7.0 is considered to be acidic.

Some basic guidelines for eating to help balance your pH include:

• Drink a lot of water.

• Eliminate all soda pop.

• Reduce the amount of meat you eat.

• Minimize your consumption of sugar and sweets.

• Eat a lot of vegetables, including raw vegetables.

Much great information and more detail on balancing the pH, plus guidelines for eating can be found at www.hopeforcancer.com

Other tips that may be beneficial to helping you prevent cancer, I believe, should include the following:

1. Get regular exercise.

2. Get adequate sleep.

3. Consume good quality vitamin and mineral supplements.

4. Reduce stress in your life.

5. Laugh.

6. Have at least one or two pets. Dogs & cats can be wonderful friends to have

around.

7. Do not smoke cigarettes.

8. Use natural cleaning products as much as possible.

9. Avoid excessive use of pesticides.

10. Eat organic foods when possible and fewer processed foods. Fruits, vegetables and meats can all be obtained organically. Foods grown organically have been grown without the use of pesticides and usually have a higher vitamin-mineral content than conventionally-grown foods.

11. Do internal cleanses. Our bodies acquire numerous parasites and toxins. Probably over 90% of our diseases are caused by these parasites and toxins. Your local health-food store should be able to give you good information about various kinds of cleanses.

In summary, if your body is healthy & you rarely get sick because you are practicing good health habits, your chances of avoiding the perils of cancer are excellent!

Avoiding Cancer The Natural Way

Friday, October 12, 2012
Despite the billions spent racing for the cure, the overall mortality rate from cancer has not changed in six decades. Though we have launched an attack that has left tobacco retreating, we expect a shortage of oncologists in 2020 to care for the one in two men and one-third of women expected to develop cancer in their lifetimes. In the educated, health-conscious county of Marin, California, one in four women is destined to suffer from breast cancer.

Why? Keep in mind that 80–95% of cancers have an environmental component and may be preventable through awareness and action. Considering the vast number of chemicals we have introduced into our environment in the past 60 years, it is tempting to feel like proverbial “sitting ducks” awaiting massacre by carcinogens. But some of the greatest threats have been there all along, and are easy to eliminate, or at least control.

1. Test Your Home for Radon

Following smoking, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S, and it is completely avoidable. Spend $20 to purchase a radon detection kit, and have your home vented if needed. Radon has been found in all regions, new and old construction alike.

2. Enjoy the Sun Safely

Nearly 50% of Americans are expected to develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. Cover up, use hats and umbrellas, and avoid direct sunlight between 11am-3pm. Pack the sunscreen, but keep in mind that sunscreen has not been shown conclusively to prevent skin cancer.

On the other side of the equation, it is estimated that 24,000 people die from cancer in the U.S. each year from lack of sun exposure (more than twice the number that die from skin cancer). A recent study showed that those individuals who got 2000 IU’s of vitamin D daily had half the risk of breast cancer and only one-third the risk of colon cancer; 10-15 minutes in the sun with 40% of the body exposed can result in the absorption of 2000-5000 IU’s.

3. Practice Safe Sex

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of cervical cancer and is believed to be responsible for 25% of oral cancers in the U.S. as well. Hepatitis C is the leading cause of liver cancer in the U.S. Hepatitis B is the leading cause of liver cancer worldwide. All of these can be transmitted sexually. Fortunately, safe sex in a monogamous relationship has been linked with a lower risk of cancer in both men and women!

4. Open Your Windows

The Environmental Protection Agency has ranked indoor air quality 4th in environmental causes of cancer. Open windows and use good ventilation. Avoid wood burning stoves and fireplaces. Purchase a few house plants. NASA has determined that common houseplants can absorb common household carcinogens like formaldehyde.

5. Be Cautious with Chemicals

Only 2% of chemicals used in commerce have been tested for carcinogenicity. Use gloves, wear masks, read labels, and read Material Data Safety Sheets on chemicals you are exposed to at work. At home, go through your closets and toss conventional cleaning products, selecting environmentally friendly alternatives. The book Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time, provides a list of the most common household carcinogens, and alternatives that are available.

6. Eat Healthily

Eating 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day halves your risk of developing cancer. While “super foods” have been studied for their role in cancer prevention, our number one recommendation is to eat a wide variety of foods. This increases the chance you will get the nutrients you need to avoid cancer, while minimizing exposure to possible carcinogens. This can also help you maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is the second leading preventable cause of cancer, rapidly on its way to win the gold medal, as tobacco use declines and obesity soars.

7. Find a Holistic Doctor

Some medications--even a few which are commonly prescribed for minor infections--are listed on California’s Proposition 65 as cancer causing agents in humans. Although most X-ray procedures are clearly needed, ask about alternatives. Women who are genetically predisposed to breast cancer have a 4-fold increased incidence of developing cancer if they are exposed to chest X-rays prior to age 20. Though total body CT scans in individuals without symptoms are advertised for “prevention,” they have not been shown to increase survival by picking up disease at an earlier stage. They do, however, expose you to radiation--equal to the amount you would have received 2.4 km from the center of the Hiroshima atomic bomb blast.

Make sure you are up to date on preventive health care visits. There has been controversy over the benefits of mammograms and prostate screenings, but screening Pap smears and colonoscopies have clearly saved lives. Also, keep a detailed family history and share this with your health-care provider, so he or she can recommend further screening if needed.

8. Avoid Pesticides

Children who are exposed to home and garden pesticides are up to seven times more likely to develop leukemia. Dogs that live in homes where chemical weed killers are used are three times more likely to develop lymphomas. Hand-pull weeds or use alternative landscaping. Go organic, and minimize your exposure to all pesticides.

9. Limit Alcohol Intake

Red wine has blanketed the news for its virtues, but a word of caution is deserved. Alcohol intake is currently responsible for 3.6% of cancer deaths in the U.S. Men should limit their alcohol intake to two drinks per day, and women, one. Resveratrol, the cancer-fighting phytochemical found in red wine, can be found in regular grape juice.

10. Don’t Smoke! (Or Breathe Second-Hand Smoke)

As you know, smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and a major health risk.

Prevent Cancer by Eating Berries

Friday, October 5, 2012
It has been well established that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is helpful in preventing many diseases including cancer.

What has also been feverishly investigated is the effects of berries on the body. Some researchers have studied the health benefit of specific berries while others have focused on isolating the health-promoting bioactive compounds that give berries their claim to fame.

Some of the known cancer-preventive agents present in berries include vitamins A, C, and E and folic acid; calcium and selenium; beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and lutein; phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol; triterpene esters; and phenolic molecules such as anthocyanins, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, ellagitannins, and phenolic acids. Berries contain high levels of a diverse range of phytochemicals, most of which are phenolic molecules.

If you’re not familiar with the majority of these compounds then don’t worry. They are all more or less different types of antioxidants. That berries exhibit potent antioxidative properties is widely accepted, but their biological properties extend beyond antioxidation.

In fact, berries also exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, are able to inhibit cell proliferation, modulate cell cycle arrest, and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells with little or no negative effects in normal cells.

These traits make berries an awesome addition to any health-minded diet.

For example, a 2006 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry extracts inhibit the growth of human oral, breast, colon, and prostate cancer cells.

In 2006, the journal Nutrition and Cancer published a 6-month cancer-preventive pilot study that was conducted by administering 32g or 45g (female and male, respectively) of freeze dried black raspberry powder (BRB) to patients with Barrett’s esophagus (BE), a pre-cancerous esophageal condition.

BE’s importance lies in the fact that it confers a 30-40-fold increased risk for the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma, a rapidly increasing and extremely deadly form of cancer. At the time of the publication, interim findings from 10 patients with BE supported the finding that daily consumption of BRB promoted reductions in two markers of oxidative stress.

So it goes without saying that berries are a blessing. As a rule of thumb, any food (or berry) that has a deep colourful hue will most likely be a high source of antioxidants. The key is to incorporate a wide variety of different colours in order to benefit from all their respective antioxidant properties.

Add berries to your smoothies, to your morning cereal and salads, or enjoy them on their own. Here’s a berry-licious recipe to get your taste buds started:

Berry Fusion Breakfast

½ cup each of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries

¼ cup goji berries, soaked (optional)

4 tbsp shredded dried coconut

1 cup rice or nut milk of choice

•combine berries in a bowl, sprinkle coconut overtop, and top with milk.

After that, many cancer wristbands went into the market spreading the word, many organizations joined the bandwagon and produced their own cancer wristbands. It has come to be that the color of the cancer wristband represented which type of cancer was to be benefited; for example, pink bracelets were in aid for breast cancer. Messages and statements would be inscribed in the bracelets empowering the knowledge of the people about cancer and tugging their hearts and the hearts of others to help out for the worthy cause.

Cancer wristbands are not only cool, they also help out, many small organizations can help out by browsing the internet and order them from reputable manufacturers who pledge assistance for every cancer wristband you purchase. You may also do your own fundraising; some sites offer very low prices for wholesale purchases so that you can sell them at a markup price so you can have earnings to donate to research facilities. Be aware, support cancer wristbands to help cancer research.

Diets to Treat Cancer

Friday, September 28, 2012
Many people facing cancer choose alternative cancer therapies. These alternative cancer treatments are sometimes chosen in lieu of traditional treatments and sometimes they are taken in conjunction with the more traditional cancer therapies like chemotherapy and radiation. Deciding upon a course of treatment for cancer is a personal decision that shouldn't be reached lightly. If you are dealing with cancer, you should thoroughly research alternative treatments and discuss them with your doctor so you can choose the best option for you.

Dietary changes are among the most popular alternative cancer therapies today. This includes juice fasting like the Gerson Diet and Hallelujah Diet which emphasize the consumption of freshly juiced raw vegetables. The Budwig Diet is another popular alternative cancer treatment where you eat specific foods, namely cottage cheese blended with flax oil in order to bring about healing in your body.

The idea behind using diets to treat cancer is that a proper diet will nourish your body and allow it to become strong enough to defeat cancer. In addition, some foods are known to feed cancer cells, like sugar, and some foods are known to fight cancer, like broccoli sprouts. Green tea is another popular food used to treat cancer and prevent its occurrence because of its reported antioxidant abilities.

Other alternative cancer therapies involve the use of certain cancer fighting herbs. One of the most widely known herbal formulations is known as Essiac and is taken in tea form. It is a combination of Indian rhubarb, slippery elm, burdock, and sorrel. Other herbs thought to fight cancer include red clover, turmeric, saw palmetto, wheat grass, and pau d'arco.

Mind body medicine also plays a big role in alternative cancer therapies. Using techniques like meditation to help relieve stress and visualization to kill cancer cells calls upon the powers of your mind to help your body fight off cancer cells. You can buy guided visualization CDs or download them from the internet that walk you through a meditation where you visualize an army of white blood cells destroying cancer cells in your body. Mind body techniques can assist traditional treatments and do not interfere with them like other techniques might.

Even though herbs might be all natural, they still have a medicinal effect upon your body and can interact with each other and with prescription drugs. Therefore, it is not a good idea to consume herbal remedies blindly. More is not necessarily better. Before you begin alternative cancer therapies, you should discuss what you plan to do with your doctor to make sure your chosen therapy will not have harmful side effects based upon your individual medical condition.

You may find that your doctor is not supportive of your decision to use alternative cancer therapies. In that case, you may want to seek advice from a holistic health care provider or herbal healer. You may even want to change medical doctors. Remember, it is your body and your health is your responsibility. While you want to make an educated decision, your course of treatment is ultimately up to you.

Early Detection Of Cervical Cancer Can Save Lives

Tuesday, August 7, 2012
Cervical cancer is a serious yet highly preventable illness. Having regular Pap tests and pelvic examinations are the first line of defense for the early detection of cervical cancer and prevent it from becoming worse. Pap tests and pelvic exams can also find and treat the changing cells before they turn into cancer.

An online resource defines cervical cancer as “cancer in the cervix, the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb). The uterus is the hollow, pear-shaped organ where a baby grows during a woman's pregnancy. The cervix forms a canal that opens into the vagina (birth canal), which leads to the outside of the body.”

But sadly, normal Filipino women either do not have proper access to regular Pap tests or they cannot afford it because of economic constraints. In fact, Filipino women have the highest incidence of cervical cancer in East Asia because of the lack of Pap tests that can indicate cervical cancer in its earliest stage.

“Cervical cancer is among the most preventable cancers and even curable. In our experience, even a simple Pap Smear can be very helpful. If the Pap Smear is abnormal and is investigated with pre-malignant lesions, proper treatment can prevent cervical cancer,” Dr. Rey de los Reyes, associate professor of Far Eastern University’s (FEU) OB-Gyne Department and secretary of POGS, said.

To help Filipino women fight this type of cancer, the Philippine Obstetrical & Gynecological Society (POGS) is conducting lectures and seminars in different areas of the country and provide free Pap Smear.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the main causes of cervical cancer. It can be passed on from person to person via sexual intercourse.

There are several risk factors in developing cervical cancer, Dr. de los Reyes said. Among these are “women who have early sexual intercourse, women who have their first sexual intercourse in their teens (aged 15, 16 or 18), women who have multiple sexual partners, or even those who have one sexual partner but their sexual partners have multiple sexual partners in the past.”

Women who have multiple sexual partners are at risk of developing infections and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), he added. Women, who are in their mid-30s, late 30s up to their 60s, are also at risk of developing this kind of cancer.

Dr. de los Reyes also mentioned that symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal discharge, bleeding after sexual contact or vaginal spotting, or actual bleeding. During the advanced stage, the patient will experience severe pain in the abdomen or gastric pains. Treatment range from surgery and radiotherapy for advanced stages; and chemotherapy for early stages.

Again, Dr. de los Reyes cannot over-emphasize it enough: getting regular Pap tests, pelvic examinations and check-ups with their trusted gynecologists can early detect cervical cancer, which eventually can save lives.

Should We Treat Cancer Or Prevent Cancer?

Sunday, August 5, 2012
Cancer is one of the biggest killers around the world. In America alone, 25% of all deaths are related to cancer.

Many people think of cancer as a single problem but in fact, it is a number of problems spread throughout the body. Generally speaking, if cancer is caught in the early stages of development, it can be treated and cured.

Although there are several different types of cancer, the most common ones are Lung, Prostate, Breast, Testicular, Skin and Colon cancers.

Genes control the multiplication and growth of cells. If these genes are defective in the first place, then the cells will not be able to grow or divide properly. As a result of this abnormality, cancerous cells are born.

There are a number of factors which cause cancer. Factors which are controllable by humans are smoking, toxic elements and radiation. These can be controlled to some degree and therefore it would be wise to avoid them by changing lifestyle habits. However, there are certain elements which are outside our control.

These include mutation and inherited DNA.

As a result of studies conducted by the American Cancer Society, more than 180,000 people have died as a direct result of smoking. Another 200,000 people have died due to lack of changing lifestyle habits. Obesity, laziness and malnutrition can have an effect on the growth of cancer. Needless to say, cancer has risen by more than 50% since 1995.

Let's take a look at some of these cancer causes in more detail.

Smoking: The most prevalent and easily avoidable type of cancer is the one caused by the use of tobacco. This includes the use of cigarettes, cigars and pipes. Even though smokers are addicted to nicotine, the fact that 200,000 people die every year due to smoking caused cancer should be enough motivation to quit. Some experts say that cessation of smoking can increase lifespan by up to 20 years.

Although nothing has been proven, studies indicate that stress may also be a contributing factor to cancer. Many cancer patients are also employed in stressful jobs. Some theologians believe that stress lowers the bodies immunity to cancer.

Exercise and Healthy Eating: Healthy eating and exercise is universally known to be beneficial in many aspects. But, many people don't know that food full of nutrition can reduce the risk of cancer. Specific foods such as fruit and veg can help prevent cancer whilst fatty foods such as meat can increase the likelihood of cancer.

Skin cancer can easily be avoided by simply listening to good advice. Wear sunglasses, hats, sun cream and other sensible items of clothing to avoid the onset of this type of cancer. Although this may seem like common sense, more than one million people have been diagnosed with skin cancer in a single year.

In summary, some cancers can be avoided. New research and studies are being conducted all the time. So, rather than concentrating on how to treat cancer patients, maybe we should all be looking for more ways to prevent the cancer in the first place.

What is Cervix Cancer and What You Can Do to Prevent It

Thursday, August 2, 2012
There are a lot of women who worry about cervix cancer. However, what is cervix cancer? This is a type of cancer that grows from tissue that is in the cervix. Most of the time, it is a slow growing cancer that can have symptoms, but sometimes it does not.

However, it can be found in pap tests that you do. If you have had a pap test, they would tell you if you have cervix cancer. For those of you that do not know, the cervix is the organ that actually connects the uterus and the vagina together. The good news is that most types of cervix cancers can be prevented.

Today we are going to cover a few things that can help you to avoid getting cervix cancer. Some of these ways can be hard to understand how they can help you, but they can. So be sure to follow these guidelines that we are going to talk about.

The first thing that you need to do is to avoid HPV. These are types of sexually transmitted infections. There are a few ways that you can avoid having HPV. That includes not having sex at a very early age. Do not have a lot of sexual partners. Also, you need to make sure that your partner has not had a lot of sexual partners. You need to avoid having sex with men who are not circumcised as well.

When they are not circumcised, their penis can be a breeding ground for a lot of infections that can live in there. When having sex with these kinds of men, you have to be careful because of the way the penis works. It is made to push things out. The vagina is something that is made to take things in, thus, the infection will affect you and not the man.

Whenever you have sex with someone, you need to make sure that you wear condoms. They can protect against HPV. Condoms do not protect against getting HPV all together, but they do help a lot.

Some other things that you need to avoid in order to avoid getting cervix cancer would be smoking. People who do not smoke have a way reduced risk of getting cervix cancer. Not only that, but you will have a lower risk of getting any kind of cancer. The main thing to note here is that you need to avoid anything that can cause cancer.

This could be sun damage and other things like that. Any of these things can put you at risk for getting cervix cancer. For most women, cervix cancer is not something that you want to deal with, thus, avoid it at all costs.

If cervix cancer runs in your family, there may not be much you can do to avoid getting it. You are either going to end up with it, or you will not. If it runs in your family, it is important to get checked and to get checked often. That way if you do end up getting it, you will be able to stop it before it gets out of hand.

Remember, it is pretty slow growing, but you still want to get checked for it as much as you can. The sooner you find it, the sooner you can get rid of it.
